Elvis Ali Hazarika, an international swimmer from Assam, made history by crossing the North Channel, a channel that runs between north-eastern Northern Ireland and south-western Scotland, as the first swimmer from Northeast India and the oldest Indian.
Elvis had begun swimming at the young age of two and a half years, and by the time he was four years old, he had completed the 800-metre Dighalipukhuri. At age five, he completed a swim across Sivasagar's Joysagar Lake, which is also regarded as India's biggest manmade lake.
At the age of nine, he took part in the Asia Pacific Championship and competed for India in the SAF Games.
In June 2018, he completed 29 km of the 34 mile English Channel.
He made history in August 2019 when he completed the Catalina Channel swim as the first Assamese swimmer. In 10 hours and 59 minutes, he travelled 80 kilometers from the United States to Mexico by swimming across the Catalina Channel.
He has so far been the only Assamese to swim this far on the channels.
